A form of class contribution

In the first class family business case study on the Illapak case, I was given the part of Roger to embody (twice). We were told by the lead team to prepare 3 minute speeches to address the "family" in the beginning of the skit so please find below my speech. This was my favourite skit in which I learnt the most about family business and it's complexity from as playing the protagonist and thinking through his lens was extremely challenging yet rewarding for me. Enjoy:

Roger’s key opinions: (3 minute speech)

I’m an old man but I am probably the most experienced old businessman you can find. Starting Illapak was not easy for me, I have been through a lot. But, one has to accept that you cannot be the CEO of a company forever, especially given my past health scare. I know I have debated over selling this family business before but I have stayed loyal to the beauty of if. We have proven to be a multimillion-dollar success and I have all the faith in the world that we will continue to grow. Just as long as the succession plus presidential support of this company works in alignment. It’s a tough industry you know, working in this business. It takes dedication and sometimes vigour. This is why I believe that the succession of this business requires a certain type of characteristic. Sabrina and Guy, my two beautiful children. You must know that I am very proud of you both. Guy, I am proud of you for coming to work at the company for the past 3 years and don’t think that everyone has not noticed your dedication and motivation. People are starting to separate you from the title “The Bosses Son”.

I want more than anything for you to continue to grow under the wing of Luciano’s guidance and training, to then one-day step into your role and run the company. By then you will be well experienced, especially if you get the MBA I have been trying to convince you is beneficial for your future. I know that you and Sabrina are close and you both could potentially want to run the company someday. I just do not want such a thought to ever come in between this family. Sabrina is the most intelligent mother I have seen. She has four kids that, and quite rightly so, take up her time. Sabrina I know you are not enthusiastic about being involved in this family business and I accept that. I think it would be best for you to consult your brother and help him through this transition into taking over the family business. That way you are still involved but you can focus on your number one priority, which is your family and your other projects. Guy, I know your life is in London and you are young and feel like that is where you should remain, but just like I did when my father died, I had to step up and be the man my father can be proud of. When I pass away, I would like for you to carry on my legacy and our family’s legacy with your sister by your side.

Luciano’s role as president should and will always be filled by an external body that is not a member of this family. I value my employees. They are like my family. I never want a case where they feel like the foundation of this company is built on nepotism. I encourage hard work, which is accompanied by just rewards.

But I place greater emphasis on trust and loyalty. That is why I would love nothing more than for you Guy to step into your role and you Sabrina to support your brother and always look out for one another.
